Hi, I'm Ivan Ross.
I'm a filmmaker and a Ph.D. Candidate in the Dept. of Cinema and Media Studies at the Univ. of Chicago.
You can reach me by email: ivanross [at] uchicago [dot] edu.
My research and teaching interests include film and media theory, media archaeology, the historical avant-garde, U.S. experimental film, the romantic comedy film, and film and media production.
I have taught
Introduction to Film [syllabus], which introduces new students of film to basic concepts of film analysis via examples from different national cinemas, genres, and directorial oeuvres.
I have also taught
The Rom Com [syllabus], which offers a critical survey of the history of the Hollywood romantic comedy from Buster Keaton to Nora Ephron, via a consideration of film style,
film narration, genre theory, theories of comedy, popular culture studies, gender and sexuality theory, and various philosophical perspectives, especially those of Stanley Cavell.
I've served as course assistant for classes on 16mm film production, documentary video production, and Italian cinema of the 60s and 70s.
I've also planned courses on the representation of history in film and other media, theories of time and temporality in conjunction with avant-garde cinema, an Introduction to Film and Media Production Course
[syllabus], and a production class that teaches different film editing techniques, from tape-splicing through
Final Cut Pro
[syllabus].
